The student and I began our lesson, as always, with a quick review of what he has been doing in school. I asked him a few thoughts about the story his class had read, The Most Dangerous Game, and was pleased that his comments were quite specific. Then I gave him a short quiz to solidify the sentence structure concepts I had taught him last week. After this, we discussed three essay prompts I had brought for him. The essay prompts were centered around a video game, The Last of Us, which he had told me he had played with his brother. I want to get him thinking in literary terms about things that he enjoys on his own time, like video games; and since The Last of Us is particularly rich in symbolic and thematic content, I thought it would be a good place to start. We talked through the three essay prompts, discussing the multiple angles an essay on each prompt could take. He seemed really fascinated by this, and even mentioned that he wanted to do more than just one of the prompts. Then we started talking about essay writing. We went over the essay he had written in-session last week. I gave him three points to focus on -- focus on the topic, use topic sentences, and use transitions like "however," "therefore," etc. Then I had him write another essay, on a prompt about the need for field trips. We went over what he had written together, which was much better than last week's essay. However, he hadn't used topic sentences, so we created topic sentences together and he agreed that they made the essay sound much better. Finally, I gave him a quick preface to the Plato reading I had given him last week. For next week, I've asked him to read the excerpt from Plato's Republic, and to skim over The Pearl with an eye for the use of nature and song.

We covered summation methods, the difference between detail and summarizing diction, as well as paragraph structure. The student seems to be improving; in fact, his mother thanked me for his improved writing assignments.

We reviewed a short story the student has to turn in a draft of on Monday, and worked through both the plot problems and the grammar (he is far too free with the commas, but we talked about when and where to use them). He said he has a trimester math test coming up but that he's completed the review and feels confident about it.

First the student and I worked on Fractions and reducing them. Then we did two reading comprehension activities. Finally we read Abel's Island. She should be congratulated because this is a 6th grade book and she is understanding it.

The student and I worked on his writing, specifically two essays. One of these was a synthesis essay on the subject of school honor codes, and the other was about rhetorical devices used in an essay by Cesar Chavez. The student is able to understand and explain his points well. He often takes pains to find the perfect word or sentence. The student is doing well at making arguments.
