Session Summaries by SSAT Tutors

Weston, FL SSAT tutoring
The student completed a practice English and math section since our last meeting. He showed good improvement, bringing his English score to a 20, up from his original 15. He's also improving on the first half of the math section, and we'll continue to work on concepts and timing strategies for the second half. On English, we focused on breaking down questions over comma rules. We also reviewed possessive rules and introduced who vs. whom. On math, we talked some about using the calculator to quickly answer certain question types. Today, we introduced the reading section, discussing general section strategies. He completed a single practice passage where we focused on the different question types and how to best address them. He has practice English, math, and reading sections to complete for next week.

Today we began preparing for the ACT. We ran through test sections, and based on the student's responses, I created a study guide for him.

We worked on the English and Reading section of the ACT today. This was his first time dealing with actual questions from the exam, so much of our lesson was just acclimating him to the style and psychology of it (in relation to the SAT). For the English section, He scored a 15/15 on the first practice set I provided him with, which is a good indicator of him doing well on this portion of the exam. Time might be a factor for him, but he should be able to pull off a score in the 30s with his knowledge as the mechanics will not be an issue for him (the style questions are the ones I foresee posing any threat). As for the reading sections, he scored an 8/10 on a prose passage. With this portion of the exam, he needs to adapt more from the SAT style. For example, he is used to being directed toward specific areas in the passage with oblique answers (the SAT method) compared to a general question that does not indicate where in the passage the answer is found but with a very specific answer (the ACT method). If he maintained that performance level, he would score in the upper 20s/possible break into the 30s. I recommended that he purchase the ACT Guide in order for him to practice on actual passages. For our next session, we will continue with ACT work.
