Session Summaries by Reading Tutors

The student and I began our session discussing his English class -- his reading and grammar lessons. I quickly confirmed that he was understanding his grammar homework, which was concerned with distinguishing the possessive S which require apostrophes, from the plural S which does not. Then I gave him a lesson on sentence structure and variation. By teaching him structural concepts like simple, complex and compound sentences and stylistic concepts like varying sentence lengths, I hoped to give him more tools to improve the sound and flow of his writing. During the lesson, I had him take notes and create a chart. After this, I gave him an essay prompt, and he wrote a short essay using the methods we had worked on in previous sessions: three-part structure, topic sentences, etc. Finally, I gave him a three-page excerpt from Plato's Republic -- the allegory of the cave in Book VII. I contextualized the excerpt with a quick history of Socrates and Plato, and a brief explanation of the style, structure, and philosophy behind the Republic. For our next session, he will read the allegory of the cave and we will discuss it along with Steinbeck's, The Pearl.

Today we worked on writing a paragraph for the student's English class. This was an assignment that was structured to encourage him to take a stance on an idea and prove his point. We worked on staying focused on the topic sentence and transitioning between thoughts.

Student N agreed to write his Animal Farm paragraph (a recap of the Russian Revolution, specifically targeting "tyranny" and examples from Russia, North Korea and the characters and plot in the novel). He had most of it completed but needed to "clean" it up, addressing spelling, punctuation, capitalization, etc. He completed his essay, with all grammatical and spelling corrected, with just 10 minutes to spare - so that was it. Student X had two assignments to complete: a math assignment and the long-term project on The Odyssey. He was very stressed about writing the final paragraph, and the completion of the poster. He showed me what he had done (very nice!), and what he had left to complete. It is the point when Odysseus is advised by Circe to take the route near Scylla, in order to protect his men. We talked about it for a few minutes and I asked him why Circe was mentioned in the study guide. He immediately responded that it was Circe who advised Odysseus. I asked if that might be a good place to start his paragraph and he said, "Yes, because that is why he went that way." Great evidence of comprehension of key plot points. He struggled but completed the paragraph and consulted his mom for help in printing out all of the paragraphs so he could glue them onto his poster.

The student and I completed a review of her homework for the upcoming week today. Her reading skills have really taken off and I could not be prouder. She is sounding out words and self correcting when reading and writing. I would really like to continue building the student's vocabulary. There are many words she reads, but does not understand what they mean. I am going to begin working on building the student's reading comprehension, and vocabulary will play a big part in teaching the student how to understand what she reads.

The student used my tablet and played two games, which allowed her to practice identifying sight words. We then played a game of "Go Fish" with her sight words. She completed worksheets using her sight words, and she colored pictures. I completed an inventory of her sight words. The student did a great job today.
