Weston, FL Biology tutoring
Today we started the new chapters: Acids and Bases. I provided him with a sheet to enable him to look for key concepts. We worked on his homework together. He seems to be understanding easily, but I worry that the concepts are not sinking in deep. I am trying to help him connect the concepts with previous chapters so that he can see the usefulness of fully understanding one chapter to help build upon the next chapter. In chemistry most everything is connected.

The student started by taking the K12 unit 13 test of 16 questions, and earned a score of 93%. He is able to work with signed numbers (positive and negative numbers). He used guidance in the form of questions when working with order of operations, where he gets confused as to whether signed numbers are being multiplied or subtracted. He deeply understands "greater than or less than" (inequality) word problems, and answered questions correctly after referring to notes of which symbol is which (> or <). He practiced finding the sign of the answer mentally first, then used his calculator. Further, he has strong vocabulary skills and knew the meanings of "losses, profits, descend and ascend." He applied the strategy of putting positive numbers in the calculator first, then subtracting any negative numbers. After a short break he began unit 14: "Making and Moving Figures." We reviewed polygons including regular polygons. We noted how sides and angles are labeled to show congruence. In lesson 2, folded paper construction figures were drawn on paper and folded to represent bisectors (lines and rays that divide the figure into two equal parts). He knew that "bi-" means two. The skills update quiz score was 100% for understanding minimum as it applied to a real world example, recall types of angles and use of a circle graph. He grasps the characteristics of the straight angle. He learned an unfamiliar term, "perpendicular," and was advised to use the (x, y) number lines as an example. He was introduced to parallel lines as well. He recalled the meaning of "congruent" as equal; I added that it means equal in number and shape. He scored 100% on the lesson 2 checkpoint. He remained upbeat and worked hard!

We covered balancing chemical equations, solubility and solubility rules, chemical reactions, cations vs anions, unit conversions (g to mol, mol to atoms, etc.), acid/base reactions, and the types of reactions (combustion, single or double displacement, etc.). I think the best part was using one single chemical equation to revisit a lot of the previous material we covered. I know with chemistry the more you revisit and repeat ideas, the more the framework builds itself. We discussed mixing two salts in solution and the ideas of double displacement, balancing charges and equations, what it means to "go into solution" or be aqueous, and the solubility rules all in one problem.

The student and I covered evolution and speciation. She needed help with planning and how to prepare for the test, especially how to retain the knowledge for the exam. She was excited to master the material and do well on her exam. Most of the session was built on knowledge retention and study strategies. This was just the first session, and it seemed like a good start.

Today the student and I covered all the material in the final exam review she was given to study for her final in 2 weeks. She has a great understanding of all the subjects, and there were just a few topics I had to help her out with. It has been a great year.
