Today we discussed how his progress has been so far as well as the plan for the week with the shortened schedule for parent conferences. We will try to concentrate on preparing for his exams at the end of the week with the extra time. We continued the session working on his math, which included ratios and probability. He finished the math worksheet he started in class as well as the homework from the book problems.

We specifically covered techniques on how to prove logarithm theorems. After a brief a lesson, I let the student prove to me the product of two logs theorem. She has done very well in understanding the concepts but has a hard time proving theorems. I left her to prove the product of two logs again using the reciprocal property of logs.

We covered area between two curves and volume of solids of revolution. We went through many AP Free Response Questions from previous years. She had some trouble with deciding what the integrand should be. However, by the end of the session, she seemed much more comfortable with it. She has finals coming up, so we will be meeting again before then.

We discussed absolute value inequalities, linear inequalities, and graphing. We did one quiz on compound inequalities: conjunctions and disjunctions - the student got a perfect score. I do think she needs to do more practice of problems in the book (odd numbered ones, with answers in the back of the book that she can check) between our sessions. Next session we will start with checking the on-paper quiz before submitting, then we will work on a continuation of linear inequality topics.

We covered long division, multiplication, and addition/subtraction/multiplication/division with fractions. We also discussed techniques for approximating with long division. Finally, we practiced solving problems in different configurations. I left her with daily basic functions fraction in the form of an online game. She is still struggling with speed and making approximations, but she is improving.

The student just began a new chapter in his math class, so we spent the first 15 minutes reviewing section 1 of the chapter on "Writing and Graphing Equations in Slope-Intercept Form". We did odd problems in the text book so we could check our answers in the index. He got each one correct and was able to thoroughly verbally explain his reasoning. For the rest of our session we reviewed more of the test questions online, specifically questions on the calculator section. We both worked independently to come up with the solutions then discussed our answers to each problem and the routes we used to solve them. I think verbalizing our problem solving strategies and comparing them has been the most successful tool in helping him check his work. If we have different answers for a question, at some point during his verbal explanation he usually catches his mistakes.
