Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"I reviewed the completed reading comprehension and sentence completion exercises with the student. We discussed the answer choices and how to review carefully before selecting final answers. We discussed how her score improved on the last practice test, and reminded student of strategies to use such as translating to make sure answer makes sense, as well as reading questions before reading passage, and checking for verb tense. The student also requested to review the idioms, and we went over a few pages of idioms. Assigned additional reading comprehension and sentence completion exercises."
"We reviewed through some more difficult math problems in coordinate geometry and functions, with which the student had no problem. We delved into a practice math section with grid-ins where he only had trouble with the more conceptual/puzzle-based problems with strange shapes as well as odd functions. With some guiding, he was able to get it on his own. We then practiced through a couple reading sections, as this is his weakest area. He is getting better at finding direct contextual support for his answer choices, but he still needs to primarily focus on critical reading for the remainder of his studying. I advised that he should try to read at least a more in-depth article once a day, such as from a higher-brow newspaper or magazine publication. We topped it off with a shorter writing section, which he handled with relative ease. I urged that he try to do an entire practice test over the weekend, with each section timed so that he can get a rough estimate of where his score currently sits. He should also continue to work on vocabulary as consistently as he can."
"I proctored the student through an abridged ACT tonight. Although her Math score remained the same (27), she got every single English, Reading, and Science question correct, for a composite of 34! While she rode that wave of confidence, I had her do one more abridged Math section, and this time she boosted her Math up to a 29! With that strong finish, I am confident she will do well on tomorrow's ACT."
"We continued to work on systems of equations, focusing on graphing. I left him with some further practice. We discussed a unit test that will be coming up next month, and he stated his teacher would like to see what we have been working on, so I left all of the work with him. He has made great progress in this skill, which he believes will be the bulk of the unit test. We have decided to continue once a week for the time being, as usually not many new skills are introduced at this point before the holidays. We will revisit next month, after a regular school schedule has resumed, with a likelihood of twice a week at that time. In the next session, we will continue with some systems of equations, and work also on some systems of equations word problems."
"The student and I had a very productive session today. We reviewed all the math questions from her last complete practice test, and we tackled some really difficult concepts. I feel she definitely has a stronger grasp of absolute value now than she did at the start of our sessions."
"The student and I went over fulcrums, levers, and pulley systems. We reviewed the concept of ideal mechanical advantage in simple machines."
