Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This session was focused on guiding the student through a series of assigned exercises for review for an upcoming exam on linear equations and inequalities. Clarifications of unclear concepts and procedures were provided as questions regarding the assignment arose. As some confusion regarding the differences between explicit and recursive function rules remained, additional time was spent providing and solving example problems. Practical applications of the concepts were reviewed with reference to assigned word problems. Further topics of review included how to identify key features of a function's graph from the values and coefficients of the provided equation. The session was concluded with the completion of a number of problems selected by the student for their particular difficulty."
"This time around, we reviewed rational equations, dilations of triangles, and radicals. The student is getting a lot better at grasping them, so I took more of a passive approach this time around."
"This was a fun session because we only had to contend with the odd questions in the student's book. We had another question about the best "measure of central tendency" for a given situation, and another asking for the perimeter and area of a figure where a triangle was removed. The relaxed pace allowed me to give plenty of examples/commentary if something was nebulous. We finished early enough for me to hear the student's praise for the new Pokemon games, then we played some Tic Tac Toe before we finished with an epic art contest. He held the eraser, so ultimately my attempts at supremacy were doomed."
"This was a special session for test review! The student is really solid on most quadratic equation solving methods, which is great! She's solid on basic factoring, on factoring to solve, on completing the square, on the quadratic formula, on taking the square root, etc. She's very good at practice problems!"
"This was my first time meeting with the student. He had just started a new unit and was slowly being exposed to the material. We worked on producing linear relationships from tables and graphs. We also worked on domain and range of functions. He is confident in some of the material, but he did struggle a bit with the domain and range that was presented in class today. We reviewed a worksheet he had done, and this appeared to clarify his concerns. He is organized and thoughtful, and further practice in domain and range will reinforce the concepts. Overall, he did well today."
"This was our final session together before the student took her TSI test. We reviewed properties of real numbers, order of operations, percentages, scientific notation, and single-variable linear equations. I assigned an algebra diagnostic test from the test bank as well as four other quizzes on topics that seemed particularly challenging. The student has prepared diligently for her TSI assessment in the two weeks that we worked together. She is focused, very smart, and has great stamina as a student. I believe that she'll have absolutely no problem going as far as her heart desires with her study of mathematics, or with any subject for that matter. She is a shining pupil, and I truly enjoyed working with her!"
