Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"I reviewed the student's rough draft and made suggestions for revisions to improve it. Then, we reviewed paragraph structure. I assigned the student a new draft of the same essay."
"We did a survey and practice of the ISEE Upper Level essay section. Previous work together showed that the student has an above-average understanding of grammar and narrative. In the first half of our session, we conducted a fast-moving review of common spelling and punctuation errors. His accuracy in multiple choice questions were consistent with, or above, his grade level. The second half of the session was spent reviewing how to respond to a prompt and outline a formal response. The student performed best when brainstorming ideas to a prompt and using imagery and descriptive phrases. Organization and focus continue to be an issue, which is significant if the entrance exam has a time limit. The next session will be to practice turning an outline into formal prose, followed by practice with less prompting and a more difficult prompt."
"Today we went over background information for the student - what his English class was like last year (assignments, expectations, lessons, etc.) and what he struggled with. We discussed the structure of a persuasive/research essay and the different elements of a creative writing story, as well as the purpose and benefits of creative writing. We ended the session by creating an outline for a creative writing story that got him excited about writing and incorporated the different elements we had discussed beforehand. We also made a list of different areas of grammar that he finds difficult so that we can work on them the rest of the week (tenses, parts of speech, subject/verb agreement, pronouns, punctuation)."
