Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student is working on summer math. We reviewed decimals, percents and fractions conversions, as well as solving for variables and writing word sentences as math sentences"
"The student completed her homework of sending me the 5 most "important" worksheet/topics her past math teacher had them work on. I incorporated one of the sheets into our lesson today. The student's parents also requested that I review more basics with her as much as possible, which I also did throughout our time. We started with a real-world scenario warm-up where she was a manager at Louis Vuitton, had to utilize fractions, multiply very large numbers (in the form of items sold and $USD), use long division to give her salespeople quarterly sales targets, and she had to think deeply about how to arrive at such values each step of the way, and explain in her own words what the results represented. This use of fractions progressed to exercises in multiplying and dividing by fractions, using the concept of the reciprocal. We eventually put the operations of dealing with fractions to use in exponents, and reviewed a webpage housing a good summary of fractional exponent rules, which we referred to in completing progressively difficult resolutions of problems utilizing polynomials consisting of variables to various degrees of positive and negative fractional exponents."
"We covered current day of the week, yesterday, and tomorrow. We also covered counting by tens as well as counting by 100s to 1,000. I left place value homework for the student to work on."
"Today we began working with subtraction flashcards. The student did very well in her subtraction abilities. We also did a counting coins worksheet along with a double digit addition page. We played a subtraction game which she also did well in and ended playing an addition dice game. I have really noticed her skills improving especially in regards to mental math."
"The student and I reviewed a few pre-algebra concepts with which he was already familiar. We then spent much of our time discussing percentages, including calculating sale prices and adding tax. After moving on, we concluded our time by beginning a chapter on exponents. He is doing quite well so far."
"For today's session, we continued to work on the summer assignment. Although the student had a bit of difficulty remembering the procedure for FOIL, with a bit of practice, he grasped the concept. However, I think he would benefit from more practice with variables since he has not yet officially learned this in school."
