Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student took some practice section tests over the weekend, with much better results. We went over her math test and looked at exactly what she did wrong, then we corrected all of the problems. We decided that we will shift our focus to English starting on Friday."
"Finished confidence interval problem set. Covered normal distribution confidence intervals as well as t-distribution and population proportions. Agreed on time to meet again and begin hypothesis testing."
"Today, I met the family and reviewed some vocabulary words with the student, and distributed my vocabulary list for the ISEE. We reviewed some mathematical concepts and the wrong answers to questions on his practice ISEE. I assigned homework for next meeting."
"Went back to basics today. It was a very good session, and a lot got accomplished. Abstract reasoning is a weak point for the student, who focuses on method. As such, some things need more work. Will continue in the same vein Monday."
"I worked with the students on critical thinking using a picture book as the springboard for the lesson. Student 1's portion of the session focused on making and proving inferences. Student 2's half of the session focused on inferences, tone, and giving textual support."
"The student and I met from 3-5 pm. We were able to complete the biology concepts for week 28 as well as all of the remaining Stat concepts. We will now just maintain the coursework for SMB while we get her caught up with Geometry."
"Worked with the student on another Level 1 book. She seemed a bit more comfortable with the Olivia book because she was familiar with the characters. I also had her write some of the words as we read them, and this seemed to improve her focus. "
"We reviewed an essay she wrote and the verbal and writing sections from a practice. She has improved since last week but needs more practice. She's been assigned an essay a day for this week, and practice tests. Also, I am having her study vocabulary words in addition to reviewing the grammar rules. She is a hard worker and learns fast. I'm hoping to help her improve her essay this week."
"Today, we continued working on solving derivatives for the student's upcoming test. We reviewed all the sections in chapter 2 which included the limit definition of derivatives, tangent and secant lines, power rule, product rule, quotient rule and chain rule. The student seems very comfortable solving problems using the rules of derivation and has very little trouble starting and solving these problems correctly. We spent a great deal of time working on secant lines using a data table in order to estimate slope of the tangent line. We also discussed how to take the derivative of logarithms as well as exponential problems, which will be on the next test. Finally, we reviewed how to draw the derivative of a position function as well as how to draw the second derivative."
"We spent the first part of the session making a study plan, breaking it down task by task, day by day, with an eye to the two test dates. We have a plan that is realistic about getting the personal statements done by this weekend, while not neglecting homework. It also allows us to make progress on the ACT and SAT prep so that we can at least try to get those few extra points that could push him into the presumptive admit category for A & M. We started to proofread his first essay, and this will be the entire session the next time we meet."
"We did a review for her exam tomorrow, which included complex number arithmetic, graphing quadratic inequalities, and obtaining quadratic equations using a variety of given information. For the most part she had a good understanding of the material beforehand; there were just a couple things she needed to be re-taught. Overall, I would say it was a very successful session, because she came in anxious about just passing the exam and left feeling much more confident in her abilities."
"Worked with the student on Spanish and History. I helped him clarify reflexive verbs and how to use them, and also practiced some other grammatical structures. Also, I gave him reading comprehension strategies, including practicing active reading and analyzing the questions before reading the text."
