Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I worked on preparation for the math and science exams. I introduced the idea of ratios versus fractions to him, which he found befuddling. Density is another topic we started on, with still a small gap to bridge. Finally, I offered him some algebra problems I expected him to be more proficient in. I was a little surprised to see him struggle, because I had seen him perform more difficult algebra only a few weeks prior. Perhaps it was because I asked him to explain his work. It may have become more like a reflex for him. Next time we meet, I will review these topics and offer algebra problems that scale slowly in difficulty."
"The student and I worked on preparing for her test on multiplying one digit numbers by two, three, and four digit numbers. We spent the majority of time on using partial products to multiply. She is feeling very confident of herself for the test tomorrow. Again, she worked very hard and was focused."
"The student and I worked on reading for 30 min. He got a book from his room and he read out loud for 30 minutes. I would stop him periodically and ask clarifying questions as well as having him summarize what was going on. We then worked on a new strategy for solving two-digit multiplication problems."
"The student and I worked on reading, writing, vocabulary, and spelling work tonight. He practiced his spelling words and his vocabulary words. He's reading a lot more fluently than he was when I first started tutoring him. He's doing really well with writing, too."
"The student and I worked on several different skills in his workbook from school. He has been utilizing strategies that we have been working on together to solve problems, and they have been paying off! We started working with money yesterday to address earlier mentioned concerns."
"The student and I worked on speed of multiplication facts. We played "War" with numbers 1-12. He won the game with a two-, and then one-second handicap, and tied with me without any handicap. His speed has improved so much in the last few weeks. His accuracy is still high. His confidence is also high. He finished his 3-minute "9's" drill at school today. If he passed it, he will start 2-minute drills."
