Today, we reviewed writing algebraic expressions and equations and covered solving algebraic equations with variables on both sides. The student was able to recall steps for solving equations with fractions with ease. His attitude towards the materials was excellent, and he was well organized with his notes. I left one-page exercises for him to finish for our next session. I also asked him to reflect on his own learning strategies and his performance during the session today to create self awareness for future tests.

Today, we simply did a short needs analysis. I wanted to see where the student is with some basic foundational algebra concepts. We went over the 3 different types of equations for a line, as well as slope and y-intercept. Then, we reviewed multiplying and dividing fractions and multiplying and dividing exponents. She remembers some basic principles, but it appears that a fair amount of review will be necessary in order to bring her to the level of confidence and the speed of recall that she desires. I am going to look for a workbook that we can both use in order to supplement our sessions with appropriate homework assignments. We communicated well, and all is fine. We are going to meet again in a few days.

Today, we started the session doing online ASVAB practice tests for Science and Math. These were timed on the website we used, so the student was able to go through the tests, and I could see him put to use strategies and get an idea of his familiarity with the subjects. Next week, we will start working on a refresher for Science, going over all of the basics again. Also, we will keep working on Math and getting him used to all of the formulas that he might see on the test. I feel like this session went well and that he is starting to remember the formulas and other things from school, so math and science are really just going to be a refresher for him.

Today, we started with the student's questions about order of operations problems she had been practicing. Next, we went to our GED practice book and continued studying the General Arithmetic section. We reviewed positive and negative numbers on the number line, as well as adding using the number line. The last topic we worked on was rounding off numbers. She was having some trouble with this, so I will bring a practice sheet on this for next session. Her attitude was awesome, as usual!

Today, we went over the essay the student wrote for the practice SAT and finished reviewing the math section. She quickly cut through the questions she'd struggled with in her initial attempt at the math, which I was very impressed by. I think that the writing went well, but some of the sentences had some odd phrasing, which we discussed in depth, and she will be doing some revisions to practice crafting clearer sentences. Her argument itself was solid, and we found places to expand on it for future reference.
