Session Summaries by MCAT Tutors

West Jordan, UT MCAT tutoring
Great session with the student. We added the "T" row of Hiragana and built words for her to read, and then put into sentences. More vocabulary building as well as reading practice. She's starting to make connections without my prompting, such as automatically reading the longer vowel sounds in a double-vowel sequence. Next week we'll add the "N" row and more vocab, and maybe add some different grammar practice from a new textbook.

The student and I worked on entry into some of the more detailed aspects of Excel. Specifically, we looked at: addressing modes, range naming, macro recording, vlookup, boundary checking, and forms interfaces. The student originally wanted to look at pivot tables, but we didn't get to it this time. We will touch on pivot tables next session.

The student and I spent the session reviewing high yield biochemistry concepts. We began by walking through the different types of inhibitors tested on the MCAT, comparing and contrasting the effects each has on Km and Vmax. We then took this information and applied it to a Lineweaver-Burke plot, another commonly tested concept. After this, we discussed carbohydrate structure and terminology, including glycosidic linkages, anomers, and D vs L sugars, among others. Next, I gave her a quiz on the amino acids, testing her knowledge on structure and the three and one letter abbreviations, an essential skill for the MCAT. We finished the session with a CARS passage on public policy. We will meet in one week to work more with CARS and do more practice with physics content.

Today the student and I went over her practice test she took this weekend to make sure she understood all the questions she missed along with some of the questions she got right to ensure she knew why they were right. We also planned on another session sometime next week. I will email on Saturday to follow up with her. In the meantime, she will finish with an independent review of her practice exam and then move on to doing another practice test.

We began by going over introductions, academic and collegiate goals, and previous experience with the ACT. I determined that focusing on the English section could be the biggest help to improve the overall score. From there, we started by going over the results of a diagnostics test, and realized that focusing on overall mechanics and rhetorical skills would be the smartest choice. Next, we walked through multiple exercises, in which I asked the student to answer the questions and then explain his logic for choosing the answers. I was able to both review English concepts and give the student a sense of the kind of material that the ACT tests so that he can anticipate questions on future tests. Afterwards, the student and I discussed goals for outside studying. We agreed that studying independently for six hours each week was reasonable, and I assigned him both flashcards and practice exams that honed in on specific skills.
