Session Summaries by Chemistry Tutors

The student maintained recall of the percent error formulas, the atomic scientists, and sig fig rules from Wednesday's session. I suspect this "drill, drill, drill!" method might be useful whenever there's something he's struggling to remember. It worked for knowledge and procedures both. We spent most of the session working on bonding. He had an intuitive understanding of how the molecules fit together, which tends to be very difficult for students to grasp. Much of the difficulty he faced was simply because he had not seen the content before. Even naming was relatively easy for him. He said that he wanted to split his time between content he had learned and that he hadn't. He understood that, while not covered in class, he may be responsible for it on the final exam. This shows his attitude about learning is maturing, and I was very proud of him.

The student and I reviewed for his chemistry quiz by working on a stoichiometry worksheet. We discussed converting between mole and number of particles using Avogadro's number, and mole and mass using molar mass. We learned to set up stoichiometric ratios, calculating molar mass of each compound, positioning the Avogadro's number or the molar mass in a way which let us cancel out the unnecessary unit, etc. He understood the concepts and was able to set up the stoichiometric ratios. We completed the worksheet which included around 20 problems.
