Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student worked through a signed ACT Math section. She worked hard, but she still needs some practice on the Math sections. I recorded different problem type success rates for Algebra, Geometry, Data Analysis, and others to determine what we should work on in the future."
"The student and I had a great math session. First, we addressed her questions from the problem sets on negatives and word problems. She can do very difficult questions. Next, we covered in depth counting problems, probability, and rate problems. These are all difficult concepts, and I expect one of each type to emerge on the SAT. I also assigned problem sets on percents and "new symbol" problems."
"We went over the student's homework over plane geometry. She is working on visualizing certain geometry word problems and how to utilize the information at her disposal (formulas, diagrams, etc.) to approach the given problem. We will still focus on geometry and math during our next session. Her homework is to memorize the formula sheet."
"Today, we reviewed exponent manipulation rules (multiplying and dividing exponential terms, fractional exponents, etc.) and correspondences between graphs and functions. We also began looking at the SAT reading section. For next time, the student will complete a timed SAT reading test. I recommended she experiment with reading or skimming the entirety of each passage before answering the questions (although reading the questions ahead of time to get a sense of what she should look for wouldn't hurt). Next week, we will see if we can determine what amount of pre-reading works best for her."
"Today, we reviewed formulas, absolute value, solving and graphing inequalities, solving and graphing linear equations, dimensional analysis, quadratic formula, and polynomials. Next time, we will continue advanced algebra. I would like her to review these concepts in her textbook and do practice problems. Also, she should continue to practice her SAT reading using her textbook and outside resources such as websites."
"Today, we reviewed limits, continuity, and derivatives of basic functions, both graphically and algebraically. The student remembered some aspects but still needs to memorize definitions and the unit circle. Finally, I gave the student a cheat sheet with all of the material that is covered in Calculus."
