"We spent the most time covering gene expression, with particular focus on the structure and workings of bacterial operons. We discussed the conditions under which particular operons would or would not be transcribed, and what was needed to change those conditions. I gave the student some practice conditions to do at home, and showed her some informative animations and practice quizzes on the subject. We also spent some time on gene expression and its relation to cancer, and we briefly went over several other diagrams and terms from the chapter at the end of the session. She had some good questions about the material and seemed more confident about it at the end."
"We covered reaction rates in detail today, such as how to determine if a reaction is first or second order, and the corresponding rate equations. We talked a lot about how the collision theory contributes to reaction rates, and why increasing concentrations and temperature increase reaction rate. The student has a quiz on this material tomorrow and I expect her to do well."
"The student and I did a review for her test. She was told the test will cover the cell cycle, cancer, mitosis and meiosis. We reviewed and completed a combination of multiple choice questions, short answer and application questions. She was able to reread and correctly answer some of the questions she initially had wrong without assistance. I reaffirmed to her to take her time underline and reread or come back to the questions if it is challenging at first. Test taking strategies will be our next focus."
"I covered different drawings in inventor. He did better today, but there was still some inexperience with the functions of inventor. His attitude was fine. I was able to show him how to draw different shapes with the polygon tool and adjust orientation of the shapes."
"Today the student and I went over summation notation. He was able to work the last problem, but he struggled on the significance of sigma notation. I will take a step back next lesson and we will work on the idea of an equation. He is a terrific kid!"
"We worked on material for the student's upcoming test. She had a good grasp of the content. Specifically we worked through neutralization reactions, stoichiometry, balancing oxidation-reduction reactions, and Hess's Law enthalpy problems."
