Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We worked through a ACT science passage. She did very well. It is one of her best sections on the ACT."
"Today, the student and I pinpointed her challenges on the writing section of the SAT. We discovered that she had most trouble with subject-verb agreement and understanding how to revise clauses. We spent the majority of the time working on these two subsections. I gave her a basic grammar lesson, which helped her improve on both of these subsections as we worked on various problems together. We spent the final 30 minutes working on the analyzing, combining, and moving content subsection. While she did not do very well on this subsection in the diagnostic test she took last week, she did very well on it during this session. Overall, I am confident that she learned vital grammar skills, and this should ultimately translate to a higher grade on the writing section. For homework, I told the student to familiarize herself with prepositions and to practice spotting prepositional phrases in sentences. By being able to eliminate prepositional phrases, her chances of getting subject-verb agreement problems correct will increase."
"We reviewed the practice SAT test the student took in newly purchased SAT practice book. She is good in both Math and English but her Verbal scores were notably stronger. More difficult Math problems involved picking numbers fitting the outlined parameters to plug in to eliminate wrong answers. Somewhat difficult problems involved understanding the relationship between alternate exterior and interior angles formed by lines crossing parallel lines, the use of angles within triangles circumscribed by other shapes, i.e. circle, quadrilateral, etc., to determine the length of triangle sides. Student is smart and fast but sometimes needs to slow down to show math work and avoid simple errors and be sure to match tense and verb forms in sentence usage questions. Student was asked to complete the next SAT practice test in its entirety before next session."
"Today, we got acquainted and discussed the student's previous scores on the SAT as well as his goals for the next one. We launched right into the Writing and Language section. We discussed question types and covered many questions. He did very well, but we will continue to review these so he can increase his score. Before the next session, I am going to send him information on a test prep book, and he is going to send me his score report for the previous SAT."
"Today, we met for the first time, and we began our session with a 5 question diagnostic test; the student scored 80%. We then advanced into solving questions, thus using this forum to introduce the concepts of equations, fractions, ratios, percentage increase and reduction, word problem translation, large number-small number relativity, dividing both sides, and laws of indices. The student's major challenge was how to quickly understand the questions' requirements. However, she was extremely receptive to the techniques that I showed to her. I am optimistic that her performance during our next session will improve tremendously. Before leaving, I encouraged her to practice some problems from the textbook and then show me the result during our next session."
"Today, we moved to the SAT review book and started working through the practice exams in that text."
