Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today, the student and I focused on the math and English sections of the test. The majority of our time was spent going over some practice math problems that I assigned at the end of our last session. We covered a lot of material, and I've been making notes on concepts with which he struggles so that we can make sure to target them in future sessions. We spent a short amount of time going over a reading drill he completed. He scored a 7/10, and he showed good reasoning and critical thinking skills. We finished with a review of the rules governing comma and semicolon usage. He is going to check his availability for a session this weekend, at which time we'll finish our review of fundamental English grammar and begin working on the science test."
"The student and I reviewed the essay she wrote for me in our last session, and it was really great! She is a strong writer with a wonderful grasp on structure, clarity, and analysis. My primary note from last week's essay was a lack of specific examples, so I asked her to focus on that when she wrote another essay during our session, and she took the note wonderfully! Her second essay was specific and detailed, though lacked slightly in terms of analysis instead. This is the kind of student I love to have; she listens and uses the notes I give her so well that it can take focus away from what she was already doing well, but these are the things that are easily fixable with such a diligent and attentive student. Her writing overall is excellent, and she'll do great on her SAT, we'll spend the next few months working on the specific improvements that can get her as high a score as possible."
"The student and I went over the drafts that he had for 3 of his college admissions essays. He had good first drafts for all 3, so we went through together and I offered him suggestions on how to improve them. His first essay, about his UTV accident and how it has impacted his life view, was bordering on cliche, so we discussed ways that his narrative could sound more genuine. His second essay on failure, and his third essay on what he would change in his town, were more fully developed, so we started straight into editing on those. His homework for the next few days is to work on the essays, incorporating the suggestions we discussed today. We will have another session on Monday to go over his second drafts and get them ready for submission in plenty of time for the deadline."
"In this session, we worked on specific examples of conciseness in the rough draft of the student's paper. We also worked on the six places to use commas and the six ways to connect two equal independent clauses."
"The student is a bright student with lots of potential for improvement. Her previous tutor emphasized practice questions, so I will work to review content and test taking strategies as well. We worked on the math and science section today. She is performing with 75% accuracy, but she needs some content review for math and needs help with timing for science. She should complete the math practice test emailed to her before our next session."
"We were able to go through an English exam and start a reading exam. The student is doing better in both subjects. In English, his understanding of the rules is leading to much better results, and he is rarely confused by which punctuation mark he should use in a given situation."
