Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We went over the writing section today. The student needs to improve his speed, so we will work on that going forward. I advised him to write in the "programmed format" we've talked about, and the rubric of the test will be likewise programmed to give him a better score."
"The student and I covered quadratic equations and relationships in terms of shapes and word problems. We also reviewed the properties of right-angled triangles and utilized them in determining a given point with respect to another point & distance. She was very engaged with the taught concepts and will be gearing for her test tomorrow."
"During today's session we practiced reading sight words (from a list and from a Level B book that targeted sight words). This book also allowed the student to practice recognizing and reading the "ch" letter combination, which she displayed difficulty with during the initial session. She did better with reading sight words off of her school list, but struggled to read the words in context. I left her with extra practice (to write and sound out the four sight words she struggled with the most today ten times each to support learning). She worked hard when motivated with coloring."
"The student had specific questions on how to solve problems using components of vectors. We stressed the problem-solving strategy for these kinds of problems until she was able to solve them with more confidence. We also discussed how to solve the problems without numbers and how this can allow you to generalize the problem."
"Today, we went over basic concepts having to do with time value of money and how this concept applied to future and present value. We also went over ways of getting the rate of return for an investment depending on the future and present value. Finally, we went over coupon bonds and how they are calculated and how they work."
"We worked through Number Series and Figural Classifications, ending with a brief intro to Sentence Completions. The student did great with the Number Series, picking up on the strategies and patterns for the topic. Figural Classifications were a bit harder, but he picked up on the patterns by the time we got through the questions. He should continue to review the different types of rules that can show up. Focus on the characteristic that sticks out (color, rotation, number of sides, lines/angles, etc.) and then work on a rule from there, making it more specific or more broad depending on the answer choices. He should continue to study vocabulary to do well with Sentence Completions. We'll review the strategies next lesson, but he needs to learn words and definitions to do well on this section."
