Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"For this session, the student and I covered elementary recursion. We went through 2.5 problems from his class in order to give him a better understanding of how recursion works. Recursion and iterative recursion (what I know as tail recursion) seem to be the concepts he is struggling with the most. I taught him how to use the step function as well as other strategies to visualize the algorithms being covered in the class. For practice, I told him to try to finish writing the sumQtoP function we were working on at the end of the session. I believe the session went well, as he was better able to identify the appropriate base cases for algorithms we covered later in the session, when he wasn't able to when we first started. I am looking forward to our next session."
"The student and I went over the uses of single index arrays. She worked through her homework problems step-by-step to ensure understanding. We applied for loops and index manipulation during the FOR sequences to apply several different uses of arrays. She was very positive and motivated during the tutoring session, and has a good understanding of the material."
"The student finished a homework assignment due the next day. She reviewed variable declaration and initialization, function declaration, code modularity, design patterns, antipatterns, and code problem-solving techniques. She seemed positive about the material. She will receive extra work to do so we can review it during her next tutoring session."
"The student's homework this weekend involved new list creation procedures and helper functions. He was more comfortable suggesting approaches on his own, although he still needs a bit of pushing. He also worked a bit on his next lab assignment."
"We mostly worked through some problems from the Spring CS 61B past midterm as practice for the upcoming 61B exam on Tuesday. We also worked on some specific questions he had and talked about some general Java concepts like the static keyword and interfaces and abstract classes. We have another session scheduled for tomorrow to continue working through practice problems as exam preparation."
"The student and I worked on practice interview questions involving tree and graph traversals. This is an area that she struggles in, so we will devote another session or two to this chapter before moving on to be sure she feels comfortable with the material. When she gets the chance, she should play around with some recursive functions to get a better feel for how values are passed through each level and what is being returned with each recursion."
