Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student had completed the reading diagnostic test for me today, so we spent the first part of our session going through that. We then concentrated on tone and main idea questions across fiction and social science passages. Next time, she should have another diagnostic ready for me, and we will look at humanities passages."
"Today we talked about overall strategy for the student since she is taking the SAT soon. We mostly focused on the writing section since that was the weakest on the PSAT, although she did very well overall on the PSAT. We also reviewed a math section that she had done for homework to continue to develop her math skills and keep them fresh. We talked about common grammar errors that are tested on the SAT. She will do a full length practice test for homework so we can gauge progress and see where to focus on for the last few weeks of test prep."
"I. Vocabulary Word Study. A. Sentence matching and definitions. B. Common question words. II. Reading Section Practice. A. Using prior knowledge. B. Using context clues to determine meanings of unknown words. C. Eliminating wrong answers using the text. III. Essay planning/brainstorming. The student is struggling with the Reading Section of the test. The subtlety of the questions and the high percentage of inference questions are throwing her off. I will continue to work with her on specific strategies to use during this section, and incorporate games or activities when I can. She also needs to practice her stamina with passages similar to what will be found on the test. The fact that she reads on her own will help, and I will continue to push her to work through the more difficult reading passages that will prepare her for the test. Encouraging her to read texts slightly above her level or out of her comfort zone is a good idea, like news articles or non-fiction books/essays. She is very excited to start writing her HS application essays, and enjoys the writing process. We will do a little bit of writing each week since she enjoys it and it will help with the ELA test."
