Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student completed practice English and math sections since our last session. He left a number of questions blank due to timing issues, so we discussed the importance of answering every question. We also focused on timing strategies throughout our session. On English, we identified question types that he takes longer to complete and did additional practice. We also went through the questions he missed, identifying areas to work on. He showed good improvement when identifying main ideas for organization and style questions. We worked on using the question content to help eliminate off-topic answers. We also discussed agreement questions (subject/verb and pronoun/antecedent) and misplaced modifiers. On math, he did an excellent job on the first 30 questions, picking up the easy points with few errors. We discussed some time saving strategies using estimation and the calculator. We reviewed the distance formula and practice setting up word problems algebraically. He has a strong understanding of arithmetic properties, so we will continue to work on setting up the problems correctly and efficiently. I gave him 2 more practice sections to complete before our next meeting."
"The student practiced writing today and wrote an essay for an ACT writing prompt from the prep book. He needs some practice, but provided good examples for the point he was making in his essay. We also practiced the math section and he solved 25 questions. Lastly, we worked a bit on the reading section."
"We reviewed the math practice the student did in her own, and found that with attempting 45/60 problems, her score went from 18 to a 20. For next time, I assigned a passage from each of the sections."
