Session Summaries by SAT Math Tutors

Waterbury, CT SAT Math tutoring
Today we worked on the SAT reading section using practice test 2. This was the first session in which we were able to get through all five passages in the span of our two-hour session. In one of the passages, the student even answered all questions correctly. He seems to have improved in the reading section, which is a good sign. For homework, I have assigned him to complete the remainder of the verbal section in practice test 1, and to complete the verbal sections in practice test 2.

Today, the student and I continued our math preparation. We completed another section with the focused attention to pinpoint gaps in her understanding from Algebra 1 and Geometry. Her attitude was positive throughout the session. I included strategies to convey recurring concepts. I left the student with instruction to complete the section that we were working on so that we can review it at our next session.

Today, the student and I did the last half of her SAT. It was the math portion, both calculator and non-calculator. We went over the problems when she was finished and went over the things that she found very very confusing quickly before finishing. Tomorrow, we'll go over the whole test. Specifically, we'll target the classical passages of reading, the last half of the writing section, and whatever math problems she would like.

Today, the student and I focused on Writing. We worked through many practice flashcards provided by the tutoring company's online Learning Tools. The specific topics that we focused on were Identifying Preposition Errors, Rewriting Full Sentences, Moving Sentences, Ambiguous Pronoun Errors, and Inconsistent Pronoun Usage errors. I am going to send some online resources to her to help with the Moving Sentence questions because that has been the section that she has consistently struggled the most with. She is also going to self-grade the Practice Test #3 that she completed last week, and we will discuss any questions she needs help with next time.

Today, the student and I reviewed errors from a practice PSAT she completed for hw. We then reviewed a practice SAT math section from her prep book. For hw, she must watch math videos on systems of linear equations. She needs to master solving systems of linear equations using both substitution and elimination methods. As regards critical reading, she needs to read the passages more carefully for overall understanding. She is doing well, and I look forward to her completing more practice sections before we meet next!

Today, the student and I reviewed her scores from her most recent SAT and talked about what the experience was like. While she worked through a math diagnostic test, I looked through her score report and made a game plan. She only needs to raise her score by about 100 points, and we will accomplish this by reviewing reading strategies to ensure that she finishes the reading test on time, focused math content review to help with data analysis and grid in questions, and some writing review to add some buffer points. When she finished her math test, we talked through a reading passage together to give her a sense of the approach she should be taking. She was very open to the strategies we discussed, and I think with more practice she will be able to utilize them well.
