We spent almost the entire time working through the student's project on the novel 1984. For this, he had to select seven pivotal events from Winston's life, choose a symbol to represent each event, and explain both his choice and the symbol in a short paragraph. I helped him "flesh out" his reasoning behind his choices -- which were all important events from Winston's life, so that was good -- and symbolically represent those events. I asked him for clarification on what exactly his teacher was looking for to be sure we were completing the assignment successfully. For the first few minutes, I orally quizzed him on vocabulary words from Unit 4.

During today's session, I mostly worked on ELA work with both students. In addition, for Student 1, we worked on her vocab hw and I assigned her to read the first chapter of The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. For Student 2, we also worked on his vocab hw and math hw. Both struggled a little with the ELA prep, but once I explained the right answer, they used that knowledge to explain answers to me.

We covered providing adequate proof for statements connected to a thesis and writing topic sentences. We also worked on doing more than simply summarizing a text when the goal is to be interpreting the text. The student's ideas were thoughtful and intelligent, but he struggled in finding the appropriate language needed to present those ideas. We will continue to work on this skill in future sessions.
