Session Summaries by Organic Chemistry Tutors

Waterbury, CT Organic Chemistry tutoring
We reviewed some physics problems and topics the student said she was struggling with, primarily momentum, circular motion (including satellite orbits), moments of inertia of 1D elements. We had time to thoroughly review these topics, and the student seemed to have a good grasp of the concepts at the end of the session. We briefly discussed grades, and she said she had been doing well enough, but physics was her worst class and she would like to do better on the final.

The student has a test on Thursday, so we split chapters of physics 1 into 3 nights and will keep the last session for problem solving. We went over the kinematics (1D and 2D uniform motion, circular motion) and dynamics (Newton's laws, free body diagrams, force of gravity, static and kinetic friction forces) in the first session. She has a perfect math grounding and she is a clever student to catch things up quickly. Realizing that, I am keeping the level of reviews higher than my average teaching to other students. She doesn't feel hardship to think about how to derive formulas and thinking beyond the paper, what is going on in real life.

The student and I continued her work with the concepts of the Earth and moon. Topics such as apogee and perigee were discussed. We went through her previous test and corrected her wrong answers. Then, we discussed her current lesson of the tilt of the axis of the Earth and its relationship to the position of the sun in the daily arc. These were challenging concepts for her and any student of planetary geology. They require spatial thinking and application. We will review these at our next meeting. I am delighted that she has begun an informed dialog with her teacher. This is a boon to all and will give her greater access to learning.

The student and I worked on reviewing for a test. He brought old assignments to the session, and we reviewed concepts that had given him some difficulty. Topics covered include the levels of protein structure and the significance of protein denaturation, the difference between RNA and DNA structure, some details of photosynthesis including where it occurs and some particulars of the light independent and light dependent reactions, the cell cycle, and the distinction between eukaryotes and prokaryotes. Even though many of today's concepts were first introduced last year, he nonetheless had a good general sense of the relevant information. With a little refreshing, the details should come right back to him.

The student and I studied for her final exam. Her teacher handed out a study guide containing both multiple choice and free response questions. She did very well as we worked on the problems together, doing well to refresh old concepts. She feels very prepared for the exam.

The student and I went over his Chapter 16 materials for his test. Chapter 16 is the equilibrium chapter, and this is a topic he does particularly well in. We went through each problem he had a problem with, and we found which way conceptually we should proceed. He did a great job of taking my advice and applying it. This was a great session!
