Session Summaries by GRE Tutors

Waterbury, CT GRE tutoring
The student and I worked on Chapter 23 on Probability, Combinatorics, and Overlapping Sets in the GRE prep book. The topics we reviewed included when to multiply (AND), when to add (OR), when to divide to get rid of duplicates (combinations/order doesn't matter), subtract AND from added total to find OR, and finding probabilities by subtracting from 1. This helped clear up some remaining concepts from the last time we looked at this chapter!

The student informed me of how her studying had been going with the topics and methods that I recommended, and I helped her go through the problems she had flagged as still not being understandable. We also went through a section on arithmetic and number properties, factors and divisibility, and roots and exponents. We went over test-specific techniques, such as trying example numbers, trying enough examples to determine when a pattern develops, and trying enough examples to know when it has been enough to determine that the relation is impossible to determine. I gave the student some final recommendations about what to study before she takes her test this Wednesday, which mostly involved certain types of word problems and algebra.

Today the student and I kept up the momentum on Quant, working through two full practice test sections out of the GRE book. We completed Quant Model Test #1, Section 5 and Quant Model Test #2, Section 3. We took the tests problem-by-problem. I think this set-up works well for him, mixed with drilling particular content areas, and taking timed tests. His improvement across the board in Quant is evident to me, and for the next week it's all about keeping the material and strategies fresh before the GRE retake. Next session, we'll do one hour of Quant and one hour of Verbal per the student's request.

Today we worked on more GRE quantitative practice tests on my laptop. We focused on speed, and I tried to push him to work out as much of the problem in his head as possible, which forced him to look for faster ways of solving problems.
