Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This unit focused on gas laws. We went over definitions and also two different practice worksheets. Once we defined all of the different laws, the student didn't have any issue identifying when to use which laws/equations. She did struggle a bit with partial pressures and combining gases, but showed growing confidence in it by the end of the session. She is fun to work with and is showing clear signs of gaining confidence with the material. I've been purposely making mistakes and she really enjoys 'catching' me in them and it helps her retain certain information better."
"If the student sits down and refreshes this material tonight, his chemistry exam will go smoothly tomorrow. We worked through some practice problems, silently working then checking in at the end of each question. There were only a few times that he wanted to rush the question, so I reminded him to slow down and read the problems carefully, and things improved."
"Today, the student was preparing for a mid-term exam and we solved some practice problems that we started on Tuesday. She is much improved today compared to Tuesday. The subjects of discussion were chemical equilibria, acid-base equilibria, and kinetics. We discussed how to calculate half-life of zero order, first order, and second order reactions. From half-life and concentration, we discussed how to calculate rate constants. We discussed how to select the strongest and weakest conjugate acid or conjugate base from a list of acids and bases with chemical dissociation constants. She solved some pH problems and talked about how to identify, from a list of salts, whether the solutions in water are acidic, basic, or neutral. Finally, I gave her some practice problems to solve. Next week, we will change topics to common ion effect, buffer solutions, and acid-base titrations."
