Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student read from the book, On Writing. He also read three articles about language arts from the reading program. He wrote a composition describing how to make a teepee. We then read together from the book, The Captains Courageous."
"Today was another good session with the student! We continued with tax and discounts, and moved onto comparing unit prices which is a little more than he will potentially cover in 7th grade, but something I thought that he could handle and played nicely with proportions and ratios practice. He had no issues with doing the problems, he is just in need of a little more confidence in his abilities and reassurance that he is on the right path. I gave him a quiz on the whole proportions unit for homework, in addition to wrapping up his last two discount problems and told him if he felt comfortable we could move on to the next topic. We started a little bit of surface area practice and went over rectangular prisms, and I gave him cylinder practice for homework as well."
"Today we covered, ratios, rates, and unit rates. The students were not struggling with much today. They both just need a little more work on their multiplication facts. They were both positive towards the material that was reviewed. I explained to them how ratios, rates, and unit rates connect to each other. I gave them a few tips on how to find multiples of numbers. I left them with a spelling sheet and two math sheets to complete on rates and unit rates. The students scored pretty well on their worksheets from last week. There were no major problems. The students are ahead now for the following school year. We covered about a third of the concepts that they need in math for next year. Overall, they are doing really well and have shown improvement in accuracy. I plan on shifting focus toward the other subjects soon. I left detailed notes on the session on location."
"Today we primarily covered exponents rules one and two. The student picked up the material quickly and applied the concepts to the problems well. I gave her a folder that we will add to throughout the school year with supplemental materials and notes to help her with pre-algebra. I also left her with two practice problems and a word problem. We will cover these at the beginning of our next session."
"Today we reviewed multiplying and dividing decimals. The student is more comfortable with multiplying decimals than he is with dividing them. A bit more practice will prove productive, but he does not struggle too severely."
"Today we reviewed the practice problems that I had assigned the student last week. These covered factoring, FOILing, and systems of equations. We spent the rest of the session going over geometry concepts, including the distance formula, special triangles, and finding the circumcenter and orthocenter of a triangle. I assigned more practice problems in these areas for next week."
