At today's session, the student and I reviewed passages from both Of Mice And Men and Speak. First, we discussed the setting and time period in which Of Mice And Men takes place, as well as the dynamic of the relationship between George and Lennie. Then we discussed the Second Marking Period chapter of Speak. We focused on the changes in Melinda's relationships with her parents, David Petrakis, Heather, and IT. We also discussed the First Amendment section of that chapter, looking at why Melinda would want to study David Petrakis further. His ability to analyze and interpret the books he is reading has greatly improved. For homework, I've asked him to identify key passages in the second chapter of Speak and discuss how they affect Melinda.
