Session Summaries by Science Tutors

Washington, WA Science tutoring
In this section the student and I went through expressing and analyzing what graphs meant physically such as the distance traveled in a car in how much gas is used and deer population. We also did ample examples in plotting position graphs from velocity and also acceleration graphs. She and I discussed how to go from acceleration to velocity and vice versa. I left her to try out some of the problems on her own and to come back and meet with me to discuss the problems.

For this section we reviewed conservation of energy, work and power. We reviewed specific concepts and equations for work and its applications to conserving energy and by external forces. Following the review session, we completed some of the homework problems assigned to accentuate and highlight the concepts in the literature.

We started with physics, working on problems involving calculating the force of gravity. We then worked on a projectile motion problem before moving on to pre-calc. He has a quiz tomorrow and a chapter test later this week so we reviewed the material that will be on his upcoming tests. Topics included evaluating sin, cos, tan, sec, csc, and cot, graphing any of the trigonometric functions, and solving problems involving arcsin, arccos, arctan, arccsc, arcsec, and arctan.

I helped the student review for her test tomorrow. We reviewed concepts such as work, power, kinetic and potential energy, impulse, momentum, and the different collisions involved in momentum. We reviewed those terms conceptually, and did a few practice problems.

We covered aspects of intro thermodynamics. This included specific heat, heat capacity, internal energy, isobaric, isochoric, isothermal and adiabatic processes. I focused on conceptual understanding. She learns quickly and is spending time studying on her own.

We covered experiments elucidating atomic structure (Thomson, Rutherford, Dalton, Bohr), types of radioactivity (alpha, beta, and gamma) and how these are reflected in chemical equations, the relationship between quantized energy levels and the wavelengths of light emitted from atoms, how to incorporate natural abundance values into mass calculations, and mass spectrometry. The student seemed very comfortable with the material and assimilated new information quickly. He also asked questions that demonstrated a thorough understanding, such as observing that species of higher mass are deflected less than species of less mass in a mass spectrometry experiment. I expect the student to perform well in any evaluation based on the concepts reviewed today.
