Washington, WA SAT Math tutoring
The student is extremely good at seeing mathematical patterns. What I want him to work on now is going back and forth between equations. He just needs practice for this, and I trust he will pick it up quickly.

The student had written an Essay, done a practice Writing section, and studied some Latin roots from A-C for this session. First, we reviewed his essay and went over a few strategies he could use. His main issue is developing and adhering to his thesis statement throughout his essay. His writing and arguments are well developed. He will be doing another essay for next week to practice these skills. The writing section he did went reasonably well, but he did have some issues. Certain grammatical errors such as semicolon usage and tense/term agreements were somewhat unfamiliar to him. We went over the correct usages, and he will be doing another section for next week to practice them. I then gave him a short quiz on determining word meanings based on the roots he had studied, and he will be studying the roots from D-I for next week.

The student and I worked on English today, specifically, we worked on vocabulary, parallel sentence errors, writing and revising, and the importance of context. Just because an answer makes sense doesn't mean it's correct in context. The student should look at least one sentence before and after, preferably more!

The student and I spent our session yesterday doing a comprehensive review of geometry, which she says is one of her areas of weakness. We reviewed all the pertinent equations and information for lines, angles, triangles, quadrilaterals, and circles. She then practiced finding the missing sides of right triangles and the radius, diameter, circumference, and area of circles. We then worked through several difficult geometry questions, talking through how even the most challenging questions can be solved using basic skills.

The student and I reviewed the diagnostic tests she took last week in preparation for the session and did some more drilling on all 3 sections of the SAT. She seems to be gaining more confidence with everything as the test approaches, and we will continue to work on all 3 sections next session. I look forward to our continued work together!

The student and I worked through approximately 30 SAT math questions focused on algebraic expressions, systems of equations, geometric sequences, and geometry problems. She needed some assistance setting problems up and using methods other than guess and check to reach the correct answer, although she was more comfortable with the content than in previous sessions. We will continue to work on this next session. We will also be focusing on more challenging problems during our next session, which is scheduled for next Wednesday.
