Session Summaries by Physiology Tutors

Washington, WA Physiology tutoring
Prior to the session, the student took a test but wasn't sure how he did. In today's session, he and I worked on acid-base problems, dealing with titrations, acid dissociation constants, and buffer solutions. He struggled initially with the ICE problems, but he was able to quickly adapt and learn how to do the problems, able to do several of them on his own. Leaving the session, I have confidence that he will do well.

Today we covered forces and waves. I explained Newton's 3 laws of motion. We also covered longitudinal and transverse waves. The student was eager to learn the material. One thing I stressed was to draw the free body diagram to determine the net force or applied force on an object. Overall, student was able to understand the concepts well.

I introduced the student to the concepts of acids/bases, pH, and pOH. He picked up the acid/base concept very quickly, although he still had some issues with weak bases such as ammonia. He also had similar struggles with pH/pOH initially, however by going through problems with him, he developed more confidence. I suggested that he continue reviewing the concepts we went over, as well as scientific notation.

During our session, we reviewed practice problems covering acid-base equilibrium, working with Ka, Kb, and Ksp constants. The student expressed some confusion with the formulas for Ka, so I was able to clarify these formulas. We then went on to do several practice problems that I found online. After a few problems, he felt generally comfortable with Ka problems (setting up the chemical equation, forming ICE charts, setting up K equation). We then moved on to do a few sample problems regarding Ksp and solubility values. He said that for our next session, he wants to review electrochemistry (i.e. (delta)G = nFE, electrochemical cells, etc.), so we will focus on these topics then.
