The student had a book she got from a friend that we started using. We had been using more sophisticated texts but this one is a basic book geared for adults that goes over, among other things, pronunciation, which is mostly what we worked on.

Today I met with the student, and we discussed again how our sessions will be going forward into the school year. We will focus on grammar and writing, unless there is an assignment that he needs help with for the week. He had a timed written exam on Friday this week, so we discussed how he should prepare for it since he was given the prompt in advance of the test. Then we discussed how important grammar is in succeeding in life. I have a new grammar book that I am going to use to guide our grammar lessons, and we covered chapter 1 and 2 this week. Then we also discussed in more depth: sentence fragments, run-on sentences, that vs which, and adjectives. We finished with him attempting a worksheet with grammar mistakes. He also stated that he would like to work on building his vocabulary so we are going to work in lessons on new words. Additionally, I am going to attempt to find written papers online that he can use to practice editing.

During this session, we spent a brief period of time reviewing what all the different parts of speech (nouns, verbs, etc.). Then we went in depth over what adjectives were and I prepared several examples that we both went over together. He identified the nouns in the sentence and then the adjectives that modified them. I also had him identify the subject and verb of each sentence. We also reviewed his spelling words from the last session and he did significantly better. Overall, the session went well.

At yesterday's session, the student and I discussed the first and second chapters of John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men. We discussed the setting, plot, and characters, as well as reviewed some of the more colloquial dialogue to check his comprehension and overall he seems to have a solid grasp on this material. For next session, I've asked him to characterize Slim and Carlson.

The student and I worked through another clause worksheet. She is getting better and better at these worksheets. We are continuing to work on attention to detail, but she is quite comfortable spotting dependent and independent clauses and identifying their purpose now. We then went through two worksheets covering the last chapters of Frankenstein and discussed the text and the questions. Next week, we will start on Jane Eyre.
