Session Summaries by Math Tutors

Washington, WA Math tutoring
The student has a math test tomorrow, so we focused on his math skills this session. However, we first reviewed some of his chemistry lesson on single replacement reactions that he did not feel comfortable with. While at first he seemed confused, once he understood the basis for how the reaction occurred (differences in reactivity) he was an expert. After, we reviewed for his math test for chapter one, which focused on properties of functions including graph transformations and finding zeros and minima/maxima. We took awhile going over a few problems that were difficult. He appeared much more self-reliant with problems and was confident for the test.

The session went very well. Today we covered calculus topics such as the indefinite integral, anti-derivatives, u-substitution, and optimization problems. The student showed great knowledge of basic calculus concepts such as integration and differentiation but struggled with the topics above so we went over some textbook problems, homework problems, and drills. She showed great focus and interest and although she struggled at first, she quickly grasped the concepts.

The first student and I went over the parabola section in her textbook. By the end of the session she was doing really well with graphing parabolas and she was understanding the concepts a lot better than she had in the past. The second student and I went through the next section in geometry. He feels really confident about his last test and he is doing well with the theorems. We worked a little bit on coordinate proofs, and he did well after a few practice problems.
