The student worked on his history paper on the Black Death. First he crafted a thesis statement, then wrote the whole Introduction paragraph. He drafted topic sentences for all of the body paragraphs, and we picked out the specific pieces of evidence he will use to support his arguments. Lastly, he wrote the entire conclusion paragraph including a restated thesis. By the end of the session, he had fully completed the detailed outline he has due on Friday. He has great ideas, and was really knowledgeable about the plague. He sometimes gets caught up in the details, and needed a little help to condense this information into shorter, more general statements. This is common given his age. As he continues through high school, he will get better at identifying broad themes and crafting strong thesis statements. In the few sessions that I've worked with him, I already see improvement.

On Wednesday with the student we worked on Linguistics and Philosophy. For Linguistics we had to make a 10 minute presentation, using PowerPoint and VoiceNote to first make the slides (based on a paper for Linguistics from a few weeks ago) and then recording a spoken lecture over the slides. For Philosophy there was a 30 minute lecture and a response assignment, and we had to start making a study guide using the core concepts from the last several weeks for her upcoming test.

The student and I reviewed the words for her upcoming vocabulary test. We followed the same study method from the previous vocabulary test, where she earned 100%. First, she read each of the words and wrote definitions for the words she recognized. Next, we talked through the definitions for each word. In this process, we added two very similar words for her to study. Then, she said each word and its definition out loud. Finally, she put each of the words into a sentence. At the end of the session, we reviewed a couple of the words that were more difficult to use in context. She did very well with this exercise today. We will review synonyms and antonyms as part of our next session.

This was our first session. We spent some time discussing the student's expectations and areas of concern. Then began working on preparation and composition for a compare/ contrast paper due tomorrow. We worked on techniques for developing paper structure and ideas, focusing on discerning theme from disparate points, and using those to create a strong thesis statement.
