In this session we focused on identifying subjects and verbs, and on subject/verb agreement. We went over examples, and referred back to the text when necessary to clarify rules. The student was able to correctly identify subjects and verbs in most example sentences, and was able to successfully revise sentences showing subject/verb agreement errors. We also spent a short time at the end of the session going over the latest dialogue he has written for his comic, and discussed his upcoming projects.

At yesterday's session, the student and I discussed the "First Marking Period" chapter from the student's book. In particular, we discussed the central characters of the book, including, her "friends," her parents, and her teachers. Next, we reviewed literary devices commonly used in novels, including conflict, characterization, flashback, foreshadowing, mood, plot, point of view, setting, and tone. We looked for examples of each from the text. He seems to be engaging more actively with the material he's reading, often making important insights without much prompting.

The student brought the changes to her synthesis paper that we discussed during the last session. We went through the whole essay again to incorporate the changes as well as add transitions. I encouraged her to use clear language with details from the texts that she is discussing. I also helped her to make sure that the body of the essay was consistent with the thesis.
