We worked on the autobiography essay portion of the online course. He made really good progress writing about a football experience. The student completed three paragraphs of the body of the essay. He has an introduction, a conclusion and a final body paragraph left. He is supposed to work on it and share his progress with me. He may email me any questions or advice if he gets stuck. I reminded him to just work on it a few sentences at a time. If he feels he is getting stuck, he should come back to it after he has had food or better yet, sleep. When he has a rough draft, we can proofread it.

The student and I first discussed issues from the previous session about being better prepared for class and more organized. In our next session he will show me all of the notes he will have taken in English, and I will analyze them to see if he is understanding what it means to be a "smart" student. I have told him he is a very intelligent student, but not a smart student in that he lacks disciplined study skills. We will be working on that in the future. The rest of the session was spent working on an assignment involving descriptions of main characters in Fahrenheit 451 and their effect on the protagonist, Guy Montag. The assignment called for identifying quotes to show understanding of the specific characteristics and how they relate to Montag.

The student is continuing with "A Tale of Two Cities" by Dickens. She had another handout from her instructor today on vocabulary. We looked at it then decided she needed more help today with reading comprehension since the vocabulary quiz isn't for a couple of weeks and she was starting to fall behind in the reading. It's not an easy text, even for many adults. We utilized some online resources to read summaries of the plot, but only after we'd read the actual text. The summaries helped put the material into context and helped reinforce it. We stopped every few sentences or paragraphs as needed and discussed what was happening to make sure she didn't get lost. We also stopped occasionally to put the story into historical context because she has several class handouts on this and it's obviously important.

We completed questions about Macbeth which required evidence from the text. I showed the student how to use his study notes to locate specific quotes from the text to be used as evidence to back up his answers to the questions. Then we completed his Macbeth study notes for Act II. He is now able to complete the study questions on his own, with less guidance. I instructed him to try to complete Act III study questions on his own, which I will review and help him with as needed in a future session. We also discussed and organized a timeline of tasks that he can complete to help ensure he is prepared for his Project Presentation on Wed., as well as completed as many of the Act III study questions as possible. He was recognized by his Teacher in front of the class for his improvement in his class. He understands that the time is dedicating to his studies is positively paying off.

The student and I worked on language arts and math for this session. For language arts, we worked on determining if a paragraph has unity and coherence, and how to improve the paragraph. For math, we worked on word problems, identifying key words that tell us whether the question is about addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division, converting time from hours to minutes and vice versa, and multiplying fractions with uncommon denominators.
