How can a tutor help you master the PSAT?

As your student prepares to the take the PSAT, or the preliminary SAT, it's important that he or she feels confident and prepared. While most of the subject material on the test will be math and verbal topics that are familiar, a tutor could try to help your child review, study, and manage his or her time. The educational directors at Varsity Tutors are experienced at connecting students in Warwick with PSAT tutors. This is an excellent opportunity for your child to pursue higher test scores and meet academic expectations.

The test is nearly three hours long, and sometimes students will get caught up on the questions that are most difficult. A tutor will share strategies and techniques to strive to ensure your child gets a chance to answer all the questions on the test, and make reasonable decisions when they aren't sure about a specific problem or question. Try to make the best use of your child's study time by using an expert PSAT tutor in Warwick, RI. The tutor will cover the content of the test as well as the format and structure so your student knows what to expect and isn't surprised by anything on test day.

Session Summaries by PSAT Tutors

Warwick, RI PSAT tutoring
Today, we went over some practice tests questions the student did. We went over reading, writing, and math questions. She did well on the reading and math, not as much on the writing. We went over the writing questions in-depth. Some punctuation questions still cause her problems. We went over the em dash today. I hope she can remember that. Before our next session, I asked her to finish the practice test she was working on and do more questions.

Today was our introductory meeting. The student is having difficulty with operating with decimals, and also needs assistance with the English and writing sections of the GED. After going over her goals of passing the GED test, we discussed her current GED class which she is taking. We reviewed the syllabus for her math class and the student indicated she would try to obtain a syllabus for her English and reading classes. The student and I reviewed the concept of number places and operating with decimals, including dissecting word problems. We discussed several strategies to work on, including: practice recalling the decimal places and place holding values, estimating answers to see if the answers make sense, defining variables and operations in word problems, and working on multiplication tables. The student was tracking well with the content.

The student and I covered more practice mathematics problems for the no-calculator and calculator sections of the SAT. We discussed geometry, similar/proportional triangles, 30/60/90 triangles, solving variable equations, thinking outside the box, and discussed some statistical-type problems involving median and mean. We reviewed how to determine a representative sample for a population, and discussed converting angle measurements between degree and radian mode. The student continues to improve and pick up concepts with alacrity, and she is always a pleasure to work with.

The student and I had a great discussion today. We initially discussed the writing prompts and the 11 persuasive elements that authors use to impact readers. We discussed the overall structure for an essay with a perfect score. Overall, he performed well, pointing out persuasive elements with ease. We reviewed a near-perfect essay. We transitioned to math. He did well, but continued to make small errors. He improved overall on catching his mistake. His homework is the essay prompt I sent him via email.

Today we went over a reading section that the student took, focusing specifically on strategy and how it the section should be approached to save time and improve accuracy. We both went over the questions he missed and talked through some of the passages, discussing how much to read and when, what order to answer the questions, and how to take notes on passages. We then talked about the essay; specifically, how to structure an essay, how to use time wisely on the essay section, and what contributes to a better essay. The student plans to take another full practice test before his SAT.
