How can a Phonics tutor help you?

Phonics is an important aspect of reading for all students to understand at an early age. Specifically, phonics is the study of individual letters and the sounds they make. Understanding concepts such as phoneme counting, vowel digraphs, decoding, word to word matching, and many other phonics concepts, will be important in ensuring your child's success throughout school and through the rest of their life. Many students, however, can struggle to learn phonics, and thus struggle to learn reading. A student's ability to read can be one of the greatest indicators in whether they will graduate from high school and enter into college or university. If your child is struggling to understand phonics, then making available the tools they need to succeed is vital. One of the best tools available to them is a tutor who is both an expert in phonics and adept in teaching phonics to young students. The educational directors at Varsity Tutors in Warwick, RI, can locate a phonics tutor who might help your child meet their goals and excel on their exams.

A phonics tutor in Warwick can be the key that unlocks your child's potential in phonics. They will be able to work one-on-one with their tutor in an environment that has been removed of major distractions, which could make learning at their full potential difficult. This will give them a significant advantage over their regular classroom setting, as their personal tutor will be able to focus on their individual academic needs. Your child might be able to ask questions and receive immediate and direct feedback that will be crafted around their individual requirements in phonics.

We continued the research for Hedgehogs and started an introduction. The student's assignment is to finish the research and start the first body paragraph using Google Docs. She hasn't shared the doc with me, but will when she returns from vacation. We worked on adding an attention-getting sentence that hooks the reader. Then she added a preview sentence of the types of categorized sub-topics. Last a there was a concluding sentence to allow the reader to know what to expect as he/ she continues reading. There was a discussion (review) on capitalization, commas, etc.

Student E had gone online and retaken the previous online practice test. She had some questions for me when I arrived. We worked through these then began the second half of the second practice test. As before, both students worked through the questions on their own then we went over them. I again offered strategies for working through the questions. They have both gotten better at narrowing their choices to 2. Unsurprisingly, vocabulary still seems to be a major drawback. Student E takes the exam tomorrow. She will let me know how she does then we will plan our next sessions accordingly.

The student continues to show enthusiasm and dedication. He read two chapters of our book with little need of assistance from me. His understanding of syntax and grammar is where it needs to be, and he could become a very advanced reader for his age if he spent more time developing his vocabulary and word usage.

Today I gave the student the choice of continuing the shark book, or finding books for herself. She chose to find her own books; this option was similar to a library experience so I think she enjoyed it more. She chose picture books and wanted to read them herself, so that's what we did for the first 45 minutes. In the last 15 minutes, she found a copy of the Mother Goose fairy tales, the same book that she reads with me. So, with the book set on our knees, she chose poems for me to read. She had a good attitude for the entire session and was willing to work on sounding out words she didn't know.

We worked specifically on grammar, continuing with parts of speech; their roles in sentences; and identifying sentence errors. We also reviewed the student's brief descriptive essay and talked about strategies for improving writing: specificity, avoiding repetition, using active verbs, and varying sentence structure.
