Session Summaries by Chemistry Tutors

Warwick, RI Chemistry tutoring
The student and I met to go over Lewis structures and bond configurations, the next chapter which will be covered on his midterm. We spent time going over the Lewis representation of atoms and ions and their valence shells before moving on to how metals and nonmetals form ionic bonds and nonmetals form covalent bonds. We started going over the structure of various compounds and how to determine bonding based on valence electrons, looking to pair up unpaired electrons. This material is bringing together material from the previous sections on subshells and valence electrons and putting them into practice.

We went through the student's worksheet on molarity and mole calculations. I explained how she has to use given information to find the answer. She understood the calculations, and she was able to do them by herself. She is doing well.

In today's session, the student completed homework assignments for his chemistry, physics, and biology classes. I also had him do practice problems to review for his math test retake tomorrow. He did much better with the types of problems he originally struggled with, and I am hoping this will be reflected on the retake grade.

Wonderful session. The student and I were able to cover all of the subjects for his first unit. We reviewed sig figs, Avogadro's #, molar mass, and unit conversions. To finish the session, we worked through a couple of practice problems that incorporated all of the units from today's session.

This was our first meeting since the student's first exam. Overall, she's doing well with the material. After discussing the test, we talked about the two topics she's been working on- calorimetry and electron behavior. She's feeling confident with calorimetry and thermodynamics, so we worked mostly on orbitals, excited atoms, and the mathematics of energy transfer with atom collision. She does need to work on the theory of electron orbitals; she wasn't able to easily understand orbital structure/shells/excited states. We'll discuss that further on Friday. In the meantime, she'll continue to review her notes and keep ahead of the class.

Warwick, RI Chemistry tutoring
We discussed first and second order reactions. We focused on the different equation equivalents of the first and second order rxns and when to use each one. We then spent time on how to approach each question and came up with a plan. The plan included reading the question; writing down what info they give you, what info they are asking for, and the equation required; then re-reading the question to ensure you didn't miss anything.
