In this lesson, we went over curve sketching. We started with all the information that can be gathered from the original function f(x). This includes intercepts and vertical and horizontal asymptotes. We went over what a horizontal asymptote is and the rules and subtleties of how to calculate them. Then we moved on to what information can be obtained from the first derivative - namely intervals of increasing/ decreasing and local maxes and mins. Then, from the second derivative, you can find the intervals of concave up/ down and inflection points. We then went over how to effectively put all this information together to sketch a graph. Lastly, we worked on L'Hopital's rule and the many different forms in which expression appear in and how to manipulate them so that L'Hopital's rule can be applied.

The student and I went over some more advanced integration material. She said they did u-substitution but we didn't go over that yet. Instead, we covered the "Fundamental Theorem of Calculus," which is a simple theorem but has a lot of various applications. Her integration skills were a bit rusty from last time, so she had to brush up on the technique. The problems for today had a few unusual concepts, like how to derive an integral in one step (instead of two) using chain rule and just tricky situations in general. She actually handled some of the really tough ones very well, which was a nice surprise! The final problem we didn't quite have time to finish but we talked about what strategies would be useful to solve it and she is going to do it on her own.
