Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student practiced various questions found in an old earth science practice exam. She focused on part two, short answers, and defined unknown terms to help solved the questions."
"We began answering study questions about leaves and stems, and began reading in the chapter on plants in her biology book. Later, we read chapter 8 in "A Separate Peace," and filled out reading guide questions."
"Today we talked about plant biology, which is a major topic on the SAT. She did a good job following along."
"Reviewed all materials from the year, in preparation for the SAT. Mastered practice exams and continuing to progress with new material that will be on the test but was not covered in class."
"Today was my first session with the student. We spent our time working on her final exam review packet. We first finished the fill-in-the-blank section, and then worked on the multiple choice section."
"We used this hour to review major concepts, such as mitosis, meiosis, and genetics. We also discussed the remaining sections on ecology, food webs, and energy pyramids. The student has a note set that I made for her summarizing all of the major topics we covered to study in preparation for the upcoming exam."
"Student and I discussed her goals for our tutoring sessions and how they will supplement her existing curriculum. Student is extremely bright and already has a good handle on the course material. She's looking for help reviewing key concepts from her text in preparation for her final exam and would like to delve into specifics that may or may not be elaborated in her course text book to further her understanding of course material. We outlined a plan from her course text to follow over the coming weeks. I'll prepare video/animation links from electronic academic sources in addition to scholarly publications and media articles that elaborate on the topics we're reviewing. We'll use the text's review questions to gauge her understanding of each concept and proceed with supplementary materials from there. My goal is not only to help her understand the course material necessary for her final, but to ensure she has an informed grasp of how the material relates to her personally and that she is able to view it within a broader social/environmental context."
"The student and I reviewed for her biology final exam. Topics included evolution, genetics, DNA replication, translation/transcription, and taxonomy."
"We filled out a review sheet for a biology final exam. This covered RNA, genetic engineering, and microbiology."
"We spent the session preparing for the student's Biology exam. We discussed the brain and the nervous system. We began by going over the brain's anatomy, including the 4 lobes, the cerebellum, and the brain stem. I urged the student to memorize the anatomy, and suggested that the frontal lobe is easy to recall because it is at the front of the brain, while the brain stem is at the root of the brain. We went over the functions of each part of the brain, and then we discussed ways to assess brain anatomy/function, such as MRI and EEG. Next, I explained the 7 brain malfunctions that were in the student's notes, including Parkinson's disease and schizophrenia. I went slowly, and the student seemed to understand each one. Finally, we talked about the anatomy of the neuron, along with how nerve impulses are propagated."
"During the session with the student, we reviewed the material that will be on her geometry and biology finals. We went through several note cards that the student had already prepared and went in details into some concepts that the student had some difficulty with. We also went through several practice problems in her biology and geometry review sheets during the session. Overall, the session went well and the student felt comfortable about the topics she had some trouble with once we covered them."
"Another review for the final exam but with some new material on protists and ecology statics and models."
