Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We reviewed the student's "State of Florida" report. I will finish taking a look at it at home. There were some dates from her outline that did not make sense in her report that we will address. We also reviewed her journal letter."
"In today's session, the student and I reviewed the journal entries together and discussed different ways of improving the writing by the choice of better words and jargon. He also worked on a lot of grammar portions like (contractions, use of apostrophe, commas, capitalization rules, etc.) as a review. Today I taught him how to come up with an outline for an article using compare and contrast strategies. Homework was assigned on these topics."
"Tonight we worked on writing a strong paragraph which related to a reading. The writing prompt itself was rather difficult because it had a quote from a speech and asked the writer to write about how the girl from the article embodied the idea of the quote. The student and I spent a lot of time just analyzing the question because at first she wanted to write about what the girl had to overcome, but that was not really what the question wanted her to talk about. We did a FATP and then used the rule of three to come up with three ways that the girl showed success by trying, and how she found joy in overcoming obstacles. This brainstorming was really important because the question was so difficult. We then spent a lot of time working on the plan for the writing. By the time we finished brainstorming and planning we had spent 40 minutes. We talked about how these two steps were crucial to the student's success in completing this paragraph. We then began working on actually writing the paragraph and focused a lot on how to tie sentences together not just with transitions but by making sure that sentences related to each other and referred to each other. We discussed how, in many ways, the writing was the easier part because we already had the plan, so she just needed to spend some time on word-smithing. She has a very easy time at creative writing, so the work on focused constructed responses is helpful. I think for next time I am going to do some similar writing prompts with a smaller piece of reading."
