Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We continued a step-by-step read-through of "The Dead," focusing especially on the significance of the last 3 paragraphs as they relate to a modernist interpretation, and the foreshadowing of Gabriel's revelatory experience while he was looking at Grette on the staircase. This session concluded our prep for the English final."
"Lateral area, surface area, and volume of pyramids and cones. She is doing well, though sometimes she mixes up the lateral side and the height. She also needed a quick review of special right triangles to find lengths."
"The student and I met today to create a schedule for her remaining assignments and exams this semester. She has two formal written assignments, one mid-term, and three final exams coming up in the next two months. Our first two priorities will be the mid term and a research paper due in about 3 weeks. We will meet later this week to begin working on the paper."
"We covered the philosophical (and to some extent historical) background for the infinitesimal calculus, introduced the use of nil square infinitesimals to derive derivative rules, and explored the relation between functions and their derivatives with emphasis on either the interpretation of the derivative as a slope function or as a rate of change. We proved the Sum, Scalar Multiple, Product, and Polynomial Rules and then stated (but did not prove) the Quotient and Composite Rules. The student has a number of exercises with which he can practice using derivative rules on his own before our next session."
"I looked at the student's first draft of the 5-paragraph essay I assigned him last week. Content-wise, the draft was very good. We also began defining what should be the final vocabulary list for the year; next time we will complete the definitions."
"The student and I worked on discussions for the History of Photography class, and the World Religion class. I also helped her begin to formulate her Photography Seminar statement. She sent me a Seminar discussion for Unit 3 (on critiques) to look at over the weekend."
"Today we worked on reading comprehension and math word problems. We discussed strategies he could use on multiple choice questions. He did well summarizing and relating the main idea. In Math he did well overall, and just needs to make sure he checks his answer."
"Reviewed the art history study guide for upcoming exam, focusing on slide identification, chapter review, and comparisons between Roman and Greek Art (increasing complexity of columns, concrete vs. cut stone usage, design of civic, secular buildings rather than temples to the gods, focus on realism rather than the ideal)."
"During my session with the student, we immediately covered classes and went into detail about how instances work. This tied in with his end of the year project, which will also be covered on his test in May. After helping him with classes, we took the remainder of our time to outline what he needs to know for the test. We also spent some time looking at test practice problems and discussing strategies that he could use to maximize his score on the multiple choice section of the test. At the end of the session I gave him a list of topics that he needs to know very well for the test. I will go over the advanced topics in detail in the tutoring sessions. I encouraged him to research these topics independently as well, so that we can spend our sessions on the hard subjects."
"In this session, the student and I reviewed and corrected the activities assigned last week. I also helped him with an issue he was having downloading a program in his computer. I also sent him feedback on his last essay by email. As for homework, I assigned the student to read a short story, to finish some activities he did not do last week, and to listen to some songs in order to complete a listening comprehension activity."
"This eve we finished a complete lesson online. We worked through the activities together. This lesson was about clothes and school supplies vocabulary. The student is a very quiet, easy-going, kind kid. We are meeting again on the 19th at 8pm."
"Today we finished off the reading sample section and went over the science sample section. We worked on the pace for going through all of these in the allotted time, which student A could just barely complete. Student B usually had to guess on the last few. We had enough time to start in on a reading practice test and continue to focus on speed. The goal is to get each passage done in under 8 minutes to leave time for exceptionally difficult questions."
