"This week we started with a timed math section. The student did very well on this section. She applied the basic test taking strategies very well and used her time very well. I believe most of her concerns about math questions will be gone in the next few weeks as she gets a bit more practice. She also did an entire writing section. I think that more practice with the writing section and exposure to more common test topics will improve her in this area. Finally, we did some questions in a reading section - mostly just vocabulary questions. I believe she will do very well in the reading sections, since her read comprehension is fantastic. We will spend time working on vocabulary in the future."
"Yesterday we focused on vocabulary. We went through flash cards and mental word association. The student made a running list to study until the next session (this Monday). We went over the homework I assigned until she understood all the questions. I'm very pleased with her progress. We did a timed Critical Reading section in person and she got everything correct. For homework I assigned her more sections and I am having her fill out her answers on a scantron to accurately see how that affects time. We also came up with a strategy for reading passage questions that are multi layered and asking what an author of passage 1 would feel about the interpretation of passage 2."
"The student memorized half of the assigned vocabulary and he read through half of the assigned passages. He did go over and fully comprehend the writing section document. We went over the passages' purpose, tone, and main idea together for the ones that he did read, and I corrected his misunderstandings about the passages and helped him understand the distinction between purpose and main idea. I also provided tips and hints in determining tone. After discussing the passages together, I had him go over the passage-based questions to see if understanding the passages will aid his question answering abilities. To identify a more strategic reading style for the student, I asked him to do the same exercise (purpose, tone, main idea) twice, with the first time derived from reading only the first and the last two sentences of each passage. The student's writing improved significantly from knowing the rules."
