Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I spent the time crafting the introduction to his clarification essay. We created an outline for the rest for him to complete later."
"It was a pleasure to meet the student and his mother and to start getting to know them and how I can best be of help to them in the coming weeks. For the first half hour of our session, he and his mom gave me a general overview of his cyber-schooling program. I learned about his recent and upcoming assignments and their general approach to the writing assignments in particular. During the remainder of our session they shared with me some of his academic history, and I got to share some of my background as well. Finally, he read me his most recent writing assignment, and talked me through some of the thought processes behind it. Since it seems that he is struggling with formulating paragraphs in a way that effectively demonstrates his knowledge of a subject, I plan to use next week to get a better understanding of his current approach to writing paragraphs, and perhaps to begin working with him next week on techniques for outlining paragraphs from a key-word outline."
"The student completed 3 separate endings for her first draft narrative about a family trip. She chose three perspectives to write each ending by creating a three-column chart with Action, Thinking, and Talking to the reader. First, she chose prompts to start the writing such as "If you were in my shoes...", "At the beginning of the trip, I thought...", and "After unpacking my stuff...". Secondly, she completed the ellipses with a bullet-pointed list. Finally, she converted her pre-writing into sentences for each of her three sections."
"With the boys, we did a spelling test and 10 words. The boys took turns reading a short story, and then they answered questions about the reading. We talked about what they did over the weekend. Their sister and I practiced verb tenses and capitalization. She also reviewed with me her state assessment test experience."
"Worked on writing and saying the alphabet, saying all letters phonetically, and writing the student's name and date. Watched informational videos for kindergarten learning."
"Working with the student continues to be a pleasure. We reviewed letter identification and corresponding sounds, as well as rhyming words. We also discussed and wrote about the details to a story. I sent home the work we completed today, as well as the story "The Book" for further practice."
