Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student had written a riddle essay for his vacation assignment which we reviewed. I encouraged him to use more adjectives, more varied language, and longer and more complex sentence structure."
"This was the first session with the student and his mother. In order to establish a working relationship, we reviewed some of his work from the previous school year and discussed his personal likes and dislikes in general in an effort to know more about his frame of reference. He tends to be quite terse with oral communications and talks about his dislike of writing. We talked some about the importance of being able to communicate well in all areas of life because his success in school and college, relationships, profession, or job all require a reasonable level of communication to share and sell his ideas, abilities, and work to others in the marketplace. I gave him a timed, in-class writing assignment of three paragraphs about his favorite sport, soccer. When he completed that, we discussed its meaning, its clarity, some grammar usage, spelling and punctuation issues, and how to improve those skills. Then I gave a writing assignment for him to have done by next session, after which he, his mother, and I talked about specifics of how she can engage him in a daily conversational process to draw him out and teach him how to develop his thought processes into a story with rhythm, flow, a clear theme, and an objective. I am pleased overall with his response to our first session."
"The student and I did more SAT Critical Reading prep to help him with his reading comprehension, and went over basic essay writing rules to help him with his next assignment."
"The student's mother sees a great improvement in his recognition of sight words and his ability to spell words. We began the session with dictation of two syllable words. He spelled 8 out of 10 words independently. He and I worked on an online reading comprehension activity. He answered questions related to the passage with 86% accuracy. We concluded the session with a review of sight words. During the next session, we will work on passage reading fluency."
"The student's reading fluency has markedly improved. With practice today, she read up to 175 wpm. She has started a new book, which I encouraged her to finish before next week. We did some practice reading and comprehension, and I also had her start writing a comic strip. We will meet again next week."
"The student's reading has improved tremendously. She is considering everything that is on the page before reading. She's noticing punctuation, the faces of the characters speaking (when drawn), the differentiation of the fonts, and applying these to her reading. Her intonation has also improved. She has also become more independent when reading words she is not familiar with, and she will try them on her own before asking for help. Overall, she has made great progress with her reading."
