Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The girls and I finished going over lesson 11, which introduces third conjugation verbs and reviews prepositional phrases. Student 1 asked good questions today on how to add the endings to verbs and how to know which tense they belong to. Both girls seem to be ready to take their quiz on this lesson."
"We reviewed what the student's group plans for his chemistry experiment for the final project. We also covered the new information covered in geometry. This includes geometric transformations, specifically going over visually moving a set of points on a graph based on translation, rotation, or reflection. I went over what was going to be covered in the near future by doing the same transformations on a function, rather than a set of points."
"The student and I covered writing skills. We worked on a practice question for his humanities class, in the TEAC format (topic sentence, evidence, analysis, conclusion). He was excellent at expressing his thoughts vocally. He had a great attitude and was willing to work through the same question repeatedly to better his writing skills. Some of the techniques for writing a successful essay in the TEAC format were: the topic sentence being a restatement of the question posed; the evidence being a quote or example; the analysis being a thorough explanation and the conclusion as a summary/restatement of the topic sentence. Overall, I think this session went well; he has great potential. We will follow up with future assignments in his Humanities course."
"We completed reading and science practice passages from a website. We worked at the hard level passages to increase critical thinking and use of strategies. The student scored slightly lower than usual, though she used strategies and asked questions effectively. We will continue to work on this next session."
"We reviewed a practice test. I asked the student to finish the Science & Reading section of PT 1 in her book and then do all of PT 2 for next time. I'll be sending her some review/study guides because she said she has no content review material to study."
"We worked on a reading section and logic games; in the reading, we went through each paragraph and summarized/found main points then looked at the main point of the passage and the author's tone. It seems like the student is having some trouble applying his summary to the answer choices, which we will work on in future sessions. He is getting good at knowing which strategy to use on answer choices. Next time, we will work on logical reasoning and games again."
