In this class, firstly we did a review on vocabulary we covered last few classes, such as animals and fruit. Then we studied the daily goods, like clothes, pants, bowls, pillows, etc. I asked them to act and draw the things I introduced. I found that they can point out the English meaning when I said some Chinese terms, but they can't say it in Chinese. Next class I will introduce family relations.

The student used a Chinese-English dictionary to look up words of interest to her, and make cards for a memory game. As we played memory, she practiced making sentences using the words. We also reviewed previous vocabulary, to have conversations and read numbers, and we practiced the spring couplet from a previous session.

Today's session was basically about learning new and old characters and practicing recognizing them. I wrote the characters on different paper and students responded to what character I called by showing others the paper. Then they competed with each other to recognize the character orally and visually by picking up the character as quickly as they could. At the end of the session, each student picked their favorite character and wrote it on the paper.

The student is very familiar with the numbers, colors, shapes in Chinese now. So in every class, I will have him give and receive instructions. For example, he will give orders for me to draw and then I will do the same thing ("please use the color of red to draw five stars"). He is quite interested into animals. The animal words we learned in this class were "spider and fish". The "instruction" he gave was "please use the color of black to draw a spider" and mine was "please use different colors to draw 10 fish" . The more phrases we learned, the more sentences we made. Good job.

The student and I went through two new dialogues, involving date and time. We then did several drills on times and dates, by translating family members' birthdays, and different times and dates, that I gave to him in English. We also reviewed sentence structure, involving "also" and "who".

We did our last lesson online homework. The student got 90% of them right on her own. Then we reviewed the previous lesson. She understood the complicated reading which was great!

Varsity Tutors can help students of any age get started with Japanese tutoring. Whether you are learning Japanese as an adult or you have a child learning the language, mastering a foreign language can be remarkably challenging. This is especially true when the language is so different in form. When learning Japanese, you will soon discover the vital importance of having someone fluent in the language to practice with regularly.

A private Japanese instructor can provide invaluable insight and guidance for you or your child as you learn this beautiful language. Keep reading to learn more about the Japanese language and how Varsity Tutors can make it easy to connect with experienced Japanese tutors.

What are some of the benefits of learning Japanese?

When you think of Japan, you may think of a small island nation. While this country is roughly two times smaller than the state of Texas, it has almost 102 million more inhabitants than the state. While certainly not the largest country in area or population, it is the third largest economy in the world. Falling only behind China and the United States, the economy of Japan is greater than either the United Kingdom or Germany.

As such a financial powerhouse, you may be surprised that it is ninth in the ranking of the number of speakers throughout the world. When you take into consideration that less than one percent of the speakers of Japanese have learned it as a second language, you can quickly see the potential for being part of this exclusive club. When you are fluent in Japanese and English, you have a significant advantage in international business opportunities that tie the two together. If you have any interest in working in Japan or with Japanese clients, learning the language can truly set you apart by giving you greater access to new business connections, allowing you to negotiate better deals, and maintain an awareness of current business and cultural trends as they relate to Japan.

Several career fields are open to Japanese language learners. A few of these include:

  • Translator
  • English Language Teacher or Tutor
  • Museum Curator
  • Japanese Art and Antiquities Appraiser
  • Bilingual Localization Associate
  • Export/Import Coordinator
  • Japanese-English Customer Representative
  • Contract Writer
  • Marketing Specialist
  • Export Agent
  • Interpreter
  • Cultural Ambassador
  • Investigative Analyst
  • Small Business Solutions Specialist
  • Japanese Banking Relationship Manager
  • Human Resources Specialist
  • Logistics Coordinator

In order to understand any culture and their history, you must first understand the language. It is from language that schools of thought, cultural norms, and societal customs are derived. Without a word to express something, it cannot exist. Learning Japanese gives you greater insight into Japan's rich culture and millennia of history. Sessions with a private Japanese instructor can be an invaluable asset as you work towards your language learning goals.

What are some of the skills Japanese tutors can help me learn?

Japanese tutors can help you with all aspects of your Japanese studies, whether you're learning the language as part of an advanced degree, in secondary school, or on your own. They can even help your child who is learning Japanese in elementary or middle school. It's imperative that you or your child has the support of a fluent speaker of the language to offer support and guidance if the ultimate goal is to achieve fluency.

A few of the specific topics you may need to review with your private Japanese instructor include present tense, past tense, future tense, honorifics, particles, -tai form of a verb, question formation, express actions, reading Japanese, adjectives, causative structures, causative-passive structures, imperatives, -masu stem of a verb, pronouns, word order, plain forms of verbs, and nouns. Your Japanese tutor is not limited to the topics listed above. This list is just a sample of some of the topics you may want to cover during your private sessions. However, all aspects of the Japanese language can be reviewed.

As part of a degree program, you will undoubtedly have several semesters of core Japanese classes. Depending on the specific focus of your degree, you may have a wide variety of other courses that will require linguistic support. Some of the courses you may encounter include Japanese Literature, Japanese for Business, Japanese History, Japanese Culture, Japanese Poetry, Modern Japan, Classical Japanese, and Modern Japanese Literature. As you work your way through these and other courses, you may find you require additional academic or linguistic support. Sessions with a private Japanese instructor can provide the help you need to work towards your learning goals in individual courses.

Private Japanese instructors can also help you prepare for upcoming final exams and standardized exams such as the SAT Subject Test in Japanese. Whether you need a quick review or a more comprehensive approach, working with a personal Japanese instructor can provide the support you need to work towards your testing goals.

How is working with a Japanese tutor different from taking a class?

When learning a language in a classroom, your instructor must follow a rigorous set of guidelines according to a regimented schedule if they are to have time to present all of the content within the parameters of the class. Because Japanese has so many components that are different from English, this format can be challenging for many language learners. If you miss a couple of classes, it's easy to fall behind. Unfortunately, classroom instructors don't have the time to go back and reteach the content you missed if they are to remain on schedule. When you work with a personal Japanese instructor, both the pacing and the individual lessons are tailored to your specific learning needs.

Your private instructor can take the time to discover your learning style, language goals, your linguistic level, and the particular challenges you're facing as you work towards mastering the language. With this type of information, a personal instructor can create an individualized learning plan that addresses the areas you must focus on to maintain forward momentum in your language studies. When your needs and abilities change, your instructor can pivot and adjust your plan of study to reflect your current academic needs.

Learning Japanese requires you to speak and listen in entirely new ways. When studying in a classroom, you'll have limited opportunities to talk or listen to the language. While this is useful, it is rarely enough practice to sufficiently prepare a student to use the language in real-world settings. Working with a private Japanese tutor gives you more opportunities to practice speaking Japanese and listening to a fluent speaker of the language. This is as close to a fully immersive language experience as you can get without traveling to Japan.

A private instructor can take time to answer your specific questions and provide real-time feedback on your pronunciation and lessons. When you make mistakes in translation or pronunciation, your private instructor can point it out quickly, so you do not internalize the incorrect information. They can also offer suggestions and solutions to rectify any issues immediately.

Finally, when you work with a personal instructor, you have more control of when you devote time to your language studies. When you take a class, you must adhere to a schedule set by the teacher or the school and work around the class to schedule other personal, academic, and professional responsibilities. Individual instructional sessions, on the other hand, can be scheduled around your other commitments.

How can I get started with Japanese tutoring?

Varsity Tutors makes it easy to get started with Japanese tutoring in several different ways. You can work with a private German instructor either in person or online.

Many people initially think they need to locate someone nearby to help them learn Japanese. As mentioned previously, there are comparatively very few speakers of this important language. There are even fewer who speak both English and Japanese fluently, which can make it challenging to find local tutors - especially if you're attempting to do so on your own!

Fortunately, you don't need to work with someone in person to get the face-to-face instructional support you need. While Varsity Tutors can help you connect with local instructors, we can also help you connect with fluent Japanese instructors in other areas. This may make it easier to find someone who can work with you or your child at the level and time that is best for your personal needs.

When you open up your search to include Japanese instructors who live in other areas of the country, you gain greater scheduling flexibility. It can be easier to find someone who can work within the confines of your scheduling preferences, but you still retain all of the benefits of personalized instruction. By meeting with your personal instructor via our Live Learning Platform, you still have the opportunity to see and talk to them just as you would someone who was in the same room.

If you're ready to maximize your Japanese language studies, let Varsity Tutors connect you with professional Japanese tutors who can assist you in working towards your linguistic goals. Contact Varsity Tutors now to get started today.
