Session Summaries by Statistics Tutors

Utah, UT Statistics tutoring
This session was all about functions. We looked at a relation to determine if it was a function. We then looked at graphs to determine if it passed the vertical line test to decide if it's a function. This gave her a little trouble but by end, she seemed to grasp it; especially when we both determined you can not be in Bermuda and California at the same time. :) Then, we moved on to operations on functions and she did quite well. Another thing we did was find the domain of "domain stoppers," which are square roots and rational functions where x is in the denominator. Our session ended with composite functions. Those were fun. With it being a new concept, it at first gave her a little trouble, but she was doing so much better by the end of session. She is such a joy to work with and I look forward to next Thursday! Great job and effort!

This session we mainly focused on sketching and transforming exponential graphs. The student mostly wanted to clarify a few of the topics gone over in class that she was a little confused with but grasped the concepts quickly while having a great attitude toward the problems. I tried to explain a concept from a couple of different angles with sketching graphs as a visual aid which seemed to help achieve the purpose more efficiently. I like working with her and am looking forward to the next session.

This session we used the entire time to work through some problems on the student's math homework. The instructions for the assignment were to round the following numbers to the nearest thousandth, hundredth and tenth place. We first reviewed what each place value is for each problem. Then, we wrote out each number on the whiteboard and, starting with the thousandths place, rounded each number to the place value indicated by drawing a number line diagram to help her round all of the 3 ways. We repeated this process twice for a total of 3 problems, taking a brain break in between for silly faces and to discuss other projects she is working on in school. I reminded her at the end of the session that tomorrow will be her spelling and vocabulary quizzes, and we will continue working on rounding numbers to the nearest thousandth, hundredth and tenth place.

This session we went over a quiz review for his next quiz, which he seemed to have a handle on apart from possibly the piecewise function graphing, but after we went over some other graphing and as we continue into this chapter, I think his understanding of graphing will improve. He has a strong understanding of the definition of a function, as well as domain, range, minima, maxima, and increasing and decreasing definition procedures. We were able to complete this work so easily we decided to go ahead of his and cover using the point-slope form to find a line's equation given only a point and slope or 2 points. He had a breakthrough at the end when he seemed to get it, but I'm not worried again, as this is ahead of what he is doing in class. He is going to do his homework outside of this session since he was so strong in the material on the quiz review.

This session we went over the student's homework, a couple problems in the book, a worksheet I had given her last week, and a little bit of multiplication flashcards. This week was much better than last week, and I can see some improvement with her multiplication skills. She made a few mistakes on her homework, but with help she was able to see and correct them. She should continue to work on her 2-5 multiplication flashcards this week, and when she is ready, we will add some more numbers. I gave her a new worksheet for this week that goes over multiplying two digit numbers. She has the concept down well but just needs practice on keeping her work neat and organized and avoiding simple multiplication techniques.

This session went really well. It seemed as though the student knew the material from class, but needed some reminders and reinforcement on how to divide fractions and simplify. She continues to need prompting on some of her multiplication facts and even when borrowing in subtraction, at times. She seemed more confident in her abilities and was proud to show me her most recent progress report from school. She mentioned that she understands things but once she goes to sleep, she sometimes forgets. I reinforced the importance of practice and going back and working on things she may already know, just to refresh herself on the subjects. I am proud of how she is doing, and coming out of her shell. :)
